Huffer's Glorious Weekend

Filed on 7 May 2007 @ 06:22

The Guineas weekend has passed us by. It all started with yours truly cursing the riding anticts of McCarthy on Mia's Boy at Lingfield - I know the horse missed the break but was ridden as if on 'Nijinsky' in a donkey derby by his jockey. He was only really allowed to stride on in the last furlong, making up at least 25 lengths on the leaders and he would have most certainly won in another few strides.

I remember a few years ago a certain owner sent his trainer a gold embossed diary for Christmas. On opening, it was found to contain a number on each page, with comments against each number; for example number 2 missed break, number three too firm, number 4 needs further etc etc. The trainer rang his owner and asked for an explanation, at which the reply was, 'in future to save all the long conversation and bull, just say the number and we we'll all save time and money especially on transatlantic phone calls.'

On to Saturday morning and my usual visit for a coffee to Geoff Huffer saw him relaxed and very optimistic, I wished him well and certainly that afternoon saw the peak of his training career. Hope you latched onto my advice for the big race - there was no need for the gold embossed diary this time after a peach of a ride.

Cockney Rebel's next stop will be Royal Ascot so get your new outfits ready!

It was a different story at Shalfleet - the troubled preparation of Sander Camillo continued and time will tell us when she is right again, but the yard can take a lot out of the impressive performance of Sixties Icon who, granted the ground, will be hard to beat and surely should go close at Longchamp on Arc day.

I spotted a long amissed Noseda inmate galloping well the other day and if he goes to York I may well pay my bookmaker another visit - Soldiers Tale is the name.

I'll be back on Friday morning with all the news from HQ.
