Lope De Vega filly tops Open Yearling Sale

A strong renewal of Goffs Open Yearling & Horses In Training Sale on Thursday was topped by three time winner Rocky Bleier (Lot 187) who was purchased by Gerry Hogan on behalf of Barry Connell for €150,000. The four year old Rock Of Gibraltar gelding has displayed great form this month having won twice since the catalogue was printed, most recently at Naas last Sunday.

Arqana October Sale concludes with 8% rise in average

The Arqana October Yearling Sale concluded its four day run at Deauville on Thusday with a final session in which 109 lots went through the ring. 86 yearlings found new homes, representing a clearance rate of nearly 79%, an average sale price of €14,337 (including private sales) and generating a turnover of €1,233,000.

This is the first Group winner for Shaddwell's late son of Oasis Dream, Aqlaam, who died last October.

A Soldier's Life returns with a maiden stakes win, having been off the track since finishing fourth behind Gailo Chop in the Prix Noailles in April. A Darley homebred, he is a half brother to Copperbeech, third in the Prix Marcel Boussac in 2008, out of Zafonic's Group Three winner Aynthia. She in turn is out of dual Listed winner Altamura, herself a half sister to Group Two Prix Chaudenay winner Affidavit and two Listed winners.

This is the sixth stakes winner of the season for Authorized, who has an AEI of 1.4 and is seventh on the table of stallions standing at £10,000 or less (2014 fee).

Young sires in demand as average rises 12%

Wednesday's third day of the Arqana October Yearling Sale saw 78.5% of the 149 lots offered change hands at an average sale price of €25,427, a figure which was up by nearly 12% on the equivalent day last year. The median remained stable compared to 2013 at €20,000 while the turnover reached €2,975,000.

Steady trade in second session of Arqana October Yearling Sale

On Tuesday afternoon at Deauville, 138 yearlings went through the sales ring on the second day of the October yearling sale and 77% of them found new homes for an average sale price of €28,698, a figure slightly up compared to last year on the same day. The turnover was slightly down at €3,042,000 while the median proved stable compared to 2013 at €26,000.

Average rises 16%, though clearance rate drops from last year

The Arqana October Yearling Sale got underway at Deauville on Monday with solid results and a sustained activity from both French and international buyers. Overall, 129 yearlings changed hands for an average price of €65,838, an increase of nearly 16% compared to last year on the same day, while the median was €57,000 compared to €42,000 in 2013. The turnover reached €8,559,000, a record figure for Part 1 of the October Sale, which witnessed an increase of 12% compared to last year. Demand proved particularly strong for top end of the market profiles and 21 yearlings were knocked down for €100,000 more compared to 16 last year, a phenomenon which reflects the high selectivity of the market.

Champion Stakes G1 - Noble Mission

This is the third Group One win for Frankel's full brother Noble Mission, who has had a fine season as a five-year-old, winning the Group Three Gordon Richards and Huxley Stakes before winning his first Group One win in the Tattersalls Gold Cup in May. Since them he has won the Group One Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud on the disqualification of Spiritjim and second in the Bayerisches Zuchtrennen. As well as Frankel, he is a three parts brother to Lingfield Derby Trial winner Bullet Train and half brother to Listed winner Joyeuse, out of dual Listed sprint winner Kind, a half sister to Grade One Arlington Million and Group One Tattersalls Gold Cup winner Powerscourt, themselves out of Group Three Lancashire Oaks winner Rainbow Lake.

Noble Mission is one of seven European Group One winners this season for Galileo, who has 34 stakes winners in all, an astonishing 13% of his runners.

Queen Elizabeth II Stakes G1 - Charm Spirit

The winner of the Group Three Prix Djebel in April, Charm Spirit has been unbeaten in four starts since finishing fifth in the 2000 Guineas, winning the Group Three Prix Paul de Moussac, Group One Prix Jean Prat and the Group One Prix du Moulin last time. A €140,000 Arqana October yearling purchase, he is the first winner out of the winning Montjeu mare L'Enjoleuse, herself a half sister to a Group-placed winner. The next dam is a half sister to Group Two Temple Stakes winner Snaadee, Group Two Mill Reef winner Russian Bond, Group Three winner Cristofori, as well as the dam of German Group One winner Ransom O'War.

Charm Spirit, along with Kingman, is one of two Group One winning milers this season for Invincible Spirit, who extends his advantage over Shamardal at the head of the table of leading sires of milers.

British Champions Fillies and Mares G1 - Madame Chiang

Madame Chiang had just one run as a juvenile, winning a Yarmouth maiden, before winning the Group Three Musidora Stakes at York in May. She has run just twice since then, when unplaced in the Oaks and Prix Vermeille, but relished the testing ground here to win in style. Homebred by Kirsten Rausing, she is a half sister to two winners out of the winning Robellino mare Robe Chinoise. She in turn is a half sister to Listed winner Kiswahili (the dam of Listed winner Kinetica) out of Group Three Oaks Trial winner Kiliniski. The fourth dam is Special, the granddam of Sadler's Wells.

Madame Chiang becomes the first Group One winner for second crop sire Archipenko. The Lanwades resident has two stakes winners (the other, Lady Penko, was Group One-placed in the Prix Saint-Alary). and moves into sixth place on the second crop sires table.

British Champions Sprint G2 - Gordon Lord Byron

Tom Hogan's Gordon Lord Byron showed remarkable improvement after stepping into stakes company as a four-year-old in 2012, winning the Listed City of York Stakes and finishing second in the Sprint Cup before landing the Group One Prix de la Foret. He was placed three times in Group company last term, most notably when third behind Moonlight Cloud in the Prix Maurice de Gheest, before landing the Desmond Stakes and Sprint Cup. International travels followed, with a further Group One coming in the George Ryder Stakes at Rosehill in April. A €2,000 Goffs foal purchase, he is the first foal out of the unraced Intikhab mare Boa Estrela, a half sister to dual Group Three winner Cheyenne Star, out of Listed winner Charita.

British Champions Long Distance Cup G2 - Forgotten Rules

Unraced at two and three, Forgotten Rules made a winning debut in a Punchestown bumper this spring, and made his Flat debut when winning a 1m 6f Galway conditions event in August. Sent off the 3-1 second favourite here, he is a Moyglare Stud homebred half brother to recent Listed Listowel Stakes winner Vintage Nouveau out of the Group-placed winning Danehill mare Utterly Heaven, herself a daughter of Listed winner Epicure's Garden, an own sister to Irish 1000 Guineas winner Trusted Partner (herself the dam of Grade One winner Dress To Thrill and Grade One-winning hurdler Archive Footage) and Grade Three winner Low Key Affair.

This is the seventh stakes winner of the season for Nayef, who has also produced Snow Sky who ran a fine staying race when third in the St Leger.

The second dam, Ribot's Guest, is from an Aga Khan family that includes the likes of Group winners Rayseka, Rafayda, Ridasiyna etc.
