Average up 30% as first session of Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale concludes

The first session of the 2010 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale came to a conclusion on Wednesday, with a total of 396 horses sold over the past three days, with the gross figure topping $28.4 million. This represents a 21% increase on the figures from 12 months ago, despite 60 fewer horses being offered this year.

Average rises 9.3%, median up 33% as Jackson buys sale topper

The Fasig-Tipton Calder sale of selected two-year-olds in training on Tuesday was bolstered by the sale of a Distorted Humor colt for $2.3 million. Jess Jackson of Stonestreet Stables outbid Kaleem Shah for the half brother to Grade One winner Mr. Sidney out of multiple Grade One winner Tomisue's Delight, who is a full sister to Mineshaft.

Along with Casual Conquest, Gitano Hernando was one of two Group/Grade One winners for Lanwades sire Hernando last year, when his European runners mustered 42 wins at a 42% strike rate, placing him 12th on the list of leading British-based sires.

Hip No. 29, a colt by Tiznow consigned by Bo Hunt, Agent, went to Chuck Sandford, & Maribeth Sandford and Partner for $475,000 to top the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2010 February Selected Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training. The dark bay or brown colt, who worked an eighth in :10 1/5 at Friday’s Under Tack Show, is out of stakes placed Six Pack Sally, by Tale of the Cat.

Aggregate and average up at selective renewal of sale

The 2010 Arqana February Mixed Sale returned an aggregate of €1,160,500, up 42% from 2009. The average price settled at €9,024 against €5,663 a year ago (+60%) and the clearance rate was down at 59,17%.

With 12 European stakes winners headed by July Cup winner Fleeting Spirit (he also had BC winner Vale Of York), he was 13th on the general sires' list, but headed the table of leading sires of sprinters.

Vettori had 27 winners at a 32% strike rate last year. This is his first European stakes win since Solsite took a Strasbourg Listed contest in September 2008, though the son of Machiavellian has had Group One winners in Australia, New Zealand and, most significantly, in Brazil.

The second dam is a half sister to Group winners Sure Blade and Sure sharp.

Pallodio is the sole European stakes winner thus far for fourth crop sire Medecis, who had 14 winners from only 31 runners last year.

Average and median increase as clearance rate sticks at 53.5%

The dam of Group One Middle Park Stakes winner Dark Angel topped the bill on the concluding day of Goffs February Sale. The Machiavellian mare, who is in foal to Acclamation, is also dam of Group Two Mill Reef Stakes runner up Angel's Pursuit. Con Marnane purchased the Knockatrina House offering for €145,000 on behalf of Angel's Pursuit's owner Malih Al Basti.

Increases were recorded across the board at Tuesday's opening session of Goffs February Sale, which was topped by a €100,000 son of Montjeu bought by Hugo Merry. Offered by Abbeville & Meadowcourt Studs, the yearling colt is the first foal out of a winning own sister to US Grade Two winner Grande Melody.

Buy-back rate increases to 28.9% as Lavender Sky tops sale

The Fasig-Tipton Kentucky winter mixed sale in Lexington on Monday saw a stronger top market than last year, leading to a 36.9% increase in the average. Overall, 192 horses sold from 270 offered for an aggregate of $3,052,600, a 27.6% increase from last year. The median remained unchanged at $5,000, but the buy-back rate increased substantially from 15.6% a year ago to 28.9%.

A $2 million colt by New Zealand's own champion sire Zabeel eclipsed yesterday's millionaire lot to top the final session of New Zealand Bloodstock's Premier Sale on Tuesday.
