Top class miler

Araafa, already a winner and Group and Listed placed as a juvenile, publicly justified the faith of his trainer when finishing fourth at 66-1 in the 2000 Guineas, before going on to reward that faith even further by collecting Group 1 honours in the Irish 2000 Guineas (beating George Washington on heavy ground) and the St.James’s Palace Stakes in his next two races.

His modest showing at Goodwood in the Sussex Stakes gave the less convinced fuel to their belief that he had been over-rated, but he gave the lie to that assumption with his best ever run when finishing a close runner-up to George Washington in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

Araafa is from the first crop of his young sire, a son of the great Danzig, who has also already got a German Group 3 winning filly and several other stakes horses, and out of a full sister to the highly successful sire Pivotal; he has enough of the right credentials to guarantee support in his stallion career at Plantation Stud.

The fact that, somewhat surprisingly, Mull of Kintyre has been sent off to the States for 2007 will already make him a target for breeders of other successful horses by the same sire.

His female family is competent rather than brilliant, although the arrival of Pivotal raised its profile more than somewhat. Araafa’s dam was unraced, her dam Fearless Revival bred three other winners, including the Listed placed Brave Revival, apart from her famous sire son, and the next dam Stufida was a very high class runner. If lightning was ever to strike twice, Araafa would have an outstanding chance of being its conductor.
