New sires - BandariFiled on 19 Dec 2006 @ 16:55
New sires for 2007 | New sires for 2008 | Fee tables - all sires Bandari (IRE)Alhaarth - Miss Audimar, by Mr Leader Doughty campaignerIf medals were awarded for soundness, consistency and effort, then Bandari would surely have a fistful. He won 11 races, six of them Pattern races, during an honourable career which lasted for five seasons, and was never better than when winning the last of them, the 2005 Hardwicke Stakes, where he beat Maraahel and Gamut. He won three of his four starts at two, including the Listed Silver Tankard over a mile at Pontefract where he finished nine lengths clear of his field. He then became the property of Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum but his first run in his new ownership was disappointing. However, he then won the Lingfield Derby Trial by no less than 13 lengths, the greatest margin in a Classic trial for many a year. For whatever reason, he was beaten out of sight in the Derby itself, but went on to win the Gordon Stakes by seven lengths from First Charter and the Great Voltigeur, with Highest and Bollin Eric his closest pursuers. As a four-year-old he failed to win, but still showed good form in top company, finishing second to Millenary in the Princess of Wales’s Stakes and fourth in the Coronation Cup, Hardwicke Stakes and Jockey Club Stakes. He captured the Princess of Wales’s Stakes the following year, beating the five time Group 1 winner Sulamani, and also added the Brigadier Gerard Stakes and two other races to his score, as well as two Group places in the Cumberland Lodge and September Stakes. In his fourth season, as well as the above mentioned triumph in the Hardwicke, he was second in a Group 1 contest in Germany and third in the Jockey Club Stakes. At seven he was third to Shirocco in the same race again and fourth in the Princess of Wales’s Stakes. At one time the qualities of such a durable and talented middle distance competitor would have been valued by private Flat breeders, but speed is all the rage now. Not that Bandari lacked speed, or precocity: he showed good form over 10 furlongs as well as over 12, and there is a fair amount of speed influence in his pedigree. His sire was Champion Two-Year-Old and a top miler and with his oldest crop only seven has delivered a number of fast and precocious runners including Guineas victor Haafhd and King’s Stand winner Dominica. His dam was bred and raced in the States, which presupposes short runners, and she has produced nine other winners. The family is that of the top two-year-old Park Express, the sprinter Shinko Forest, now a successful sire himself, and leading Italian miler Waky Nao, now also a successful sire. Given the opportunity, Bandari could well prove a very useful and versatile sire under both Rules but the fear is that he will be consigned to the National Hunt market straight away. Race record
