Blue Dakota (IRE) - Died in 2007

Namid - Touraya, by Tap On Wood
Bay, foaled 2002
Breeder: Michael O'Donnell
Other sons of Namid at stud: Resplendent Glory

Precocious sprinter

Blue Dakota was one of his sire Namid’s best advertisements for his first crop, winning his first four races in grand style.

On his debut in a five furlong Newmarket maiden in mid-April he came home five lengths clear of Turnkey, followed that a month later with a six length victory, again over the minimum distance, from Alright My Son at Windsor, and a week after that had a two and a half length margin over Beaver Patrol at the same course.

His fourth win, and his best, was in the Group 3 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, where he was a neck in front of Mystical Land at the post. He then ran unplaced at Goodwood and his efforts must have taken their toll, as he was not seen out again that season. He returned in July 2005 at Goodwood again, but finished last and, after a further long lay off, ran his last race at Naas in April this year.

A son of Indian Ridge, Namid, who won at least one Group contest every year and was never out of the first three during his three year career on the track, was Champion Older Sprinter in Europe as a four-year-old in 2000, and he has gone on to prove himself a good source of both fast and early sorts.

Blue Dakota’s dam Touraya only won once, as a three-year-old, but she has delivered six winners, including the very talented filly Tarwiya, winner of the Park Stakes, second in the Moyglare Stud Stakes and third in the Irish Guineas, Curragh Stakes and Matron Stakes. She has become the dam and grandam of good winners including the Flying Childers victor Godfrey Street and the toughListed winner Messager du Roi. Blue Dakota’s full brother, the three-year-old Namaya, won at two and was third in the Railway Stakes.

His family, as can be guessed from the names, is one of the Aga Khan’s and every generation has produced a number of good black type horses, although few as fast as Blue Dakota.

With only one line of Northern Dancer (through Namid’s maternal grandsire Tate Gallery), Blue Dakota should prove a valuable outcross for many mares as well as a source of precocious speed.
