Boogie Street (GB)Compton Place - Tart And A Half, by Distant Relative Listed winning sprinter retires to Acrum StudBoogie Street is a horse who must have given his owners untold pleasure during his career, running frequently in good company and collecting enough prize money, £148,020, to keep himself in training and also make a sizeable contribution to their holiday fund. His five victories included the Listed Harry Rosebery and Rous Stakes, and his ten places counted seconds in the Group 2 King’s Stand and the Group 3 King George Stakes and two thirds in Group 3 contests as well as a creditable fourth in the 2005 Group 1 Nunthorpe behind La Cucaracha. He ran five times in 2006, mostly to no avail, but signed off with a third place in a five furlong race at Leicester in September. Breeding good horses is all about getting the mix right and the obvious theories do not always work. With sprinters there often does not even seem to be a theory, and few own a conventionally ‘fashionable’ page. Compton Place himself cannot be said to have a fashionable pedigree, or even one likely to produce a good sire, and yet he has proved able to deliver a high percentage of winners to runners from a variety of mares. He still lacks a Group 1 winner, but he has several multiple winners at the lower black type levels, as well as quite a few who are high earners by dint of their consistency and durability. Before Boogie Street appeared, there was no black type in the first three generations of his pedigree. His dam, Tart And A Half, and her sister Bag And A Bit (their names make one wonder about their temperament!) were no more than useful performers for Brian Meehan. They had one victory apiece to their credit, but Boogie Street’s dam was also placed on 19 occasions, so she did not spend too much time in her stable. Apart from Boogie Street, from her three runners to date she has produced the placed Red Beaufighter and the dual Listed winner Assertive, by Bold Edge, who was also third in the Gimcrack and the Greenham Stakes. So the apparently modest origins have provided two decent racehorses who are obviously sound and consistent. Further down the pedigree gets even less fashionable to those who believe Flat racing is the only activity worth pursuing. The third dam, Vaigrant Wind, won at two but is a full sister to Days of Thunder who was placed as a juvenile but whose chief claim to fame, like that of his dam and two other winning siblings, was as a successful jumper! May be that is where the toughness comes from – remember that the breeder of the brilliant St. Jovite selected his dam precisely because she had been successful over timber. Boogie Street himself was bought by two of the best judges in the business, by Margaret O’Toole for 19,000 guineas as a foal and by Peter Doyle for 40,000 guineas as a yearling, so there can be little wrong with his looks. There is a full brother to Boogie Street (due to be offered at the December Yearling Sales in Newmarket) to race next year and it will be interesting to see if lightning strikes twice in the same place.
