Byron (GB)

Green Desert - Gay Gallanta, by Woodman
Bay, foaled 2001
Breeder: Cheveley Park Stud
Other sons of Green Desert at stud: Alkaadhem, Cape Cross, Desert Prince, Desert Style, Diamond Green, Invincible Spirit, Kheleyf, Midhish, Oasis Dream.

Winner at six and seven furlongs

Byron only won three times, but among his victories were the Group 2 Lennox and Mill Reef Stakes, and and he was also second in the Group 3 Prix du Palais Royal and third in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains.

The most popular sires these days are mainly milers, and with his winning distances being six and seven furlongs and his Classic place over a mile, Byron already has desirable qualities.

More than that, the majority of his family excelled at distances around the mile, the exceptions being the successful sires Gay Mecene, who counted a victory in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and places in the Coronation Cup and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes among the highlights of his career, and A.P. Indy, who won the Belmont Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup Classic as two of his four Grade 1 victories.

His sire, the sprinter Green Desert, has already produced two champion first season sires in Cape Cross and the amazing Invincible Spirit, as well as other useful progenitors including Desert Style, Desert Prince, Shinko Forest and Desert Story.

The dam, Gay Gallanta, was champion juvenile filly

Byron’s dam, Gay Gallanta, was the champion juvenile filly in Europe, her triumphs including the Cheveley Park Stakes and the Queen Mary Stakes. At stud she has also done well, delivering five winners from her seven foals to race to date. Gallant, by Rainbow Quest, won six times and was Listed placed in the States, while his brother Gallant Hero had to be content with just three wins. Byron’s brother Gallantry also won twice at three and four. The Caerleon filly Gay Heroine was second in the Cheshire Oaks and her Danehill have-sister Gallivant won twice as a two-year-old.

The next dam, Gallanta, by Nureyev was a smart performer and Group 1 placed and she bred 11 winners, two of them black type, and is grandam of three more.

The further family has produced a number of useful sires, including the above mentioned Gay Mecene and A.P. Indy, as well as Sauce Boat, Wolfhound, Summer Squall, Foxhound, Lemon Drop Kid and Al Mufti.

As both Green Desert and Byron’s family seem to combine successfully with a wide variety of sire lines, he should suit a broad spectrum of mares.
