Few horses get to start their stud career at the ripe old age of 11, but Calcutta deserves some reward for the sterling work he has put in over the years on the racecourse. He possesses the soundness and durability so lacking in many modern racehorses and it is a pity more like him do not get the chance to pass on these qualities.

He ran no less that 101 times and earned over £250,000 since winning one of his three starts at two. He won 13 races and was placed on 39 occasions, three of those placings coming in the winter of 2002/3 when he was lounging in the sun in the UAE. Apart from his juvenile year, the number of runs he had each year ran into double figures except in 2000 (seven) and his final year when it was six; in 2002 he ran no less than 19 times.

He is a half-brother to seven other winners, including Resounding, who in turn is dam of the Listed placed Lord Tilly. Some of his siblings have also shown good form over hurdles and fences.

Indian Ridge seems capable of getting good sires from various backgrounds. Whether Calcutta gets enough chances is open to doubt, but if it soundness and consistency that is required, he has it in spades.
