New sires for 2008 - Dylan ThomasFiled on 17 Dec 2007 @ 15:34
New sires for 2007 | New sires for 2008 | Fee tables - all sires Dylan Thomas (IRE)Danehill - Lagrion, by Diesis At four, he kept his form at the highest level for nine monthsA son of Danehill out of a Diesis mare, Dylan Thomas is further proof of the affinity of Danehill with mares from the Sharpen Up line. He was hailed by his trainer Aidan O’Brien as one of the best he has ever had, and with four Group One wins in a four-year-old season that lasted from April to September it is not hard to see why. As a juvenile, Dylan Thomas won twice from four starts, with a place in Group Three company. At three he won his first Stakes in the Group Two Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial ahead of his narrow third place behind Sir Percy at Epsom. A month later Dylan Thomas put in a vastly improved performance, rated 7lb ahead of his Epsom performance by the Racing Post, in winning the Group One Irish Derby where he beat Italian Derby winner Gentlewave by three and a half lengths.
Dylan Thomas is a six-time Group One winner
Dylan Thomas was then dropped to ten furlongs in York’s International Stakes, where his fourth to Notnowcato can be regarded as a below-par performance in the light of his tenacious victory in the Irish Champion Stakes three weeks later, where he reeled in the great racemare Ouija Board to win by a neck. A dirt campaign in the States was the next target, but following a flop in the Grade One Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont, Dylan Thomas returned to Europe awaiting a four-year-old campaign. Racing at the highest level for nine months, Dylan Thomas won the Prix Ganay, King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, a second Irish Champion Stakes and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, showing remarkable consistency in all his races. Seconds to Notnowcato, Manduro and Authorized came over 10f, though he was beaten only once – by Sir Percy – in a European Group One over 12f. Out of Lagrion, a mare placed in Ireland, Dylan Thomas is a half-brother to the six furlong Group One winner Queen’s Logic. Bred on the same lines as Danehill Dancer (who is out of a Sharpen Up mare), Dylan Thomas could be expected to produce high class offspring from similar mating patterns as his Coolmore stablemate.
