Under appreciated three-time Group One winner

Until this year, Lord Derby’s famous Stanley House Stud had not had a resident stallion since the death of Inchinor. Now a three-time Group One-winning son of the late resident arrives in the form of his son Notnowcato.

Trained by Sir Michael Stoute for Anthony and David de Rothschild, Notnowcato was brought along slowly, winning for the first time in a handicap at the Guineas meeting at the age of three. He was kept to handicap company that season, winning once more, also at Newmarket, in October.

At four Notnowcato was stepped up into Group company, winning the Earl of Sefton and the Brigadier Gerard Stakes, both Group Threes. He improved from there on his Group One debut, finishing fifth to Lord Derby’s Ouija Board in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, and was second in the Eclipse, running on strongly behind David Junior. At York he beat his stablemate Maraahel by a short head in a thrilling renewal of the Juddmonte International – the pair were well clear of the remainder – to open his account at the highest level.

A pipe opener at Sandown on his debut at four put him right for his best win, a head defeat of Dylan Thomas in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh. This impressive effort was followed by third to Manduro at Ascot before winning the Eclipse under an astute Ryan Moore ride, taking advantage of good ground on the stands rail, beating the rest of the field, headed by Authorized and George Washington, on the far side of the track. Authorized reversed that form at York, where he and Dylan Thomas finished ahead of Notnowcato in the Juddmonte International.

Notnowcato is Inchinor’s best son. No early developer, he held a high level of form over a long period and deserves greater recognition for his three Group One wins, where his battling qualities enabled him to see off top-class opposition, than perhaps he has received.
