Impressive winner of 2000 Guineas

George Washington has been making headlines for most of his life, topping the Newmarket October Part 1 sale at 1,150,000 guineas, the most expensive yearling in Europe, in 2004, becoming Champion juvenile the following year and then a brilliant Classic winner at three. Altogether he won six of his ten starts, four of them at two and including two at Group 1 level that year, and was placed three times. The only time he was out of the frame was in the Breeders’ Cup, when he finished a creditable sixth in a race he possibly should never have contested.

His racing talent, also amply demonstrated in his victory in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes over Araafa and Court Masterpiece, was sometimes overshadowed, especially at Newmarket, by his quirky behaviour, put down to ‘arrogance’ by his trainer.

To quote the eminent bloodstock expert Tony Morris “In some ways his profile mirrors that of Nasrullah, a horse equally capable of displaying both exceptional merit and cussed obstinacy, and he will do the breed some favours if he matches the stud record of the former eccentric.”

George Washington’s half-brother Grandera, by another Danzig line horse, Grand Lodge, displayed similar quirkiness. A multiple Group 1 winner and the Champion Older Horse in Europe in 2002, he too had to have everything going his own way.

Their dam Bordighera won in France and was Listed placed, and her dam Blue Tip was a Group 3 winner and several times Group placed both in France and North America. Blue Tip bred eight winners, three more of them black type, but two of those were over jumps. Before that the family was producing fairly modest winners but has progressed to the level of ‘Gorgeous George’ and his distinguished sibling, so we shall see if either of them can excel at passing on their great talents rather than their ‘character’.
