Ivan Denisovich (IRE)

Danehill - Hollywood Wildcat, by Kris S
Bay, foaled 2003
Breeder: Irving Cowan
Other sons of Danehill at stud: Aussie Rules, Cacique, Camacho, Catcher In The Rye, Chevalier, Clodovil, Colossus, Danbird, Danehill Dancer, Danroad, Dansili, Desert King, Dylan Thomas, Exceed And Excel, Ferrule, Gentleman's Deal, Hawkeye, Holy Roman Emperor, Indian Danehill, Kodiac, Leporello, Manipulator, Mountain High, Multiplex, Oratorio, Rock Of Gibraltar, Tiger Hill, Westerner, Where Or When.

Ivan Denisovich was a late recruit to the stallion ranks for this season but will still garner plenty of support.

By Danehill, in common with so many new horses this year, he is out of the outstanding racemare Hollywood Wildcat, winner of 12 races including the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, Hollywood Oaks and Gamely Handicap, all Grade 1, as well as two at lower levels. She was also runner up in two Grade 1 races.

She has also proved to be a wonderful broodmare for, as well as our subject, she has also produced his three-parts brother War Chant (by Danzig), a Breeders’ Cup Mile winner and successful sire, Ministers Wild Cat and the Storm Cat stakes winner Double Cat. Double Cat was sold at Keeneland last November, in foal to Unbridled’s Song, for the equivalent of 636,766 guineas.

Ivan Denisovich won only three of his 14 starts, but they included the July Stakes and a Listed race at The Curragh as a three-year-old. He was sent off favourite for the Group 1 Prix Morny, but he was beaten two lengths by Silca’s Sister, and in the Middle Park he was four and a quarter lengths adrift of the winner Amadeus Wolf in fourth place. He ran a good race in the St. James’s Palace Stakes, finishing just under four lengths third to Araafa, while in America he managed second to Showing Up in the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes and then third to the same horse in the Group 1 Hollywood Derby. Nothing went right in his last race and he finished last of the eight runners in George Washington’s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

On his day he was a good horse, and with his popular sire and outstanding dam, he will be an attractive proposition.
