Let The Lion Roar (GB)

Sadler's Wells - Ballerina, by Dancing Brave
Bay, foaled 2001
Breeder: Abergwaun Farm

Let The Lion Roar’s half-brother Millenary will have his first foals on the ground this year after completing a long and honourable career on the racecourse during which he won 12 races from two to four years including the St. Leger, the Princess of Wales’s Stakes twice, the Doncaster Cup twice and the Yorkshire Cup, along with five other Group races.

Let The Lion Roar did not enjoy quite such a distinguished career, but it was a high class one nevertheless. He only won two of his eight starts, but one of those was as a two-year-old (he was second on his only other start that year) , so he was a bit more precocious than his sibling. His second victory came on his three-year-old debut, in a ten furlong race at Newbury in April where he beat Top Seed by half a length. The rest of the year was a history of ‘nearly’: he was third in the Dante Stakes, three lengths behind North Light, got a bit nearer to that horse when only a length adrift in third in the Derby, finished four lengths behind Grey Swallow in fifth place in the Irish version and then ran Rule of Law to two and a half lengths in the Great Voltigeur. Unfortunately he did not reproduce that form in the St. Leger where he finished nearer last than first behind the same horse.

However, he has plenty to recommend him: he is a son of Sadler’s Wells and stems from one of the great Ballymacoll families. His dam, who has delivered two other Group horses in Head In The Clouds and King In Waiting, is a half-sister to the Classic placed River Dancer, herself dam of Spectrum, who is proving such a success as a jumps sire, and grandam of Irish and Yorkshire Oaks victress Petrushka. The family has already produced that good dual purpose sire Saddler’s Hall, as well as the ill fated Prince of Dance among many other high class runners.
