Globetrotting Group One performer

In a career lasting over four seasons, Phoenix Reach won five of his 16 starts and was placed three times. That his victories came in places as far apart as Canada, Hong Kong and Dubai as well as at Goodwood speaks volumes for his temperament and versatility. He beat some good horses in his time, including Brian Boru, Collier Hill, High Accolade and Vallee Enchantee.

The fact that all his wins came over the Derby distance will not make him more appealing to any but the most discerning breeders, but his durability should do so. He also comes from a family which has produced other tough stars, most notably Carroll House, a half-brother to his dam, who won three times at the highest level including the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Further back in the family are many who have excelled in the Southern Hemisphere and some of them were a lot speedier than he was.

His sire, the beautifully bred Alhaarth, has delivered a multitude of high class runners, so it is to be hoped that Phoenix Reach at least gets a chance to prove himself and does not find himself consigned to the role of jumping stallion immediately.
