Progressive Sprinter at three

Resplendent Glory, a 120,000 guineas yearling who by all accounts is the spitting image of his grandsire Indian Ridge, was unraced at two, but made up for that by winning six of his seven starts before the end of July the following year.

All his victories were scored over five or six furlongs, the best of them coming in the Group 3 Laurent-Perrier Sprint Stakes at Sandown Park, where he beat Lafi and The Tatling, and a Listed race at the same course. Another excellent effort was in a six furlong handicap at Salisbury where he dead-heated with subsequent Group 1 scorer Goodricke.

Sadly injury then put a stop to his success, his two runs at four doing nothing to enhance his reputation although it was obvious he was hurting. He had been considered a serious contender for the Prix de l’Abbaye and things would have been so different had he won or even been placed in that race. However, he showed enough to merit a chance at stud.

He is one of only two sons of Champion Sprinter Namid to retire to stud as yet, but there are enough other successful sons of his grandsire - Compton Place and Definite Article being just two of them - to believe that the line can continue to provide good stallion prospects.

Resplendent Glory’s dam did not win until she was three either, but she has bred the useful Matuza, who won twice as a juvenile. She is a half-sister to Funny Valentine, third in the King’s Stand Stakes, and five other winners, while the next dam bred eight winners including the French and Italian Group horse L’Irresponsable, now at stud in Australia, and the New Zealand Listed winner Najaba.

Resplendent Glory’s fourth dam is a sister to the Middle Park Stakes victor Showdown, who became such a major influence as a stallion in Australia, out of the amazing mare Zanzara, who delivered 14 winners herself including the brilliantly fast fillies Matatina and Farfalla and is also the grandam of Oaks heroine Lady Carla.

Resplendent Glory retires to Benson Stud at a very economic £2,000 1st October.
