German-bred Breeders' Cup winner

Unraced at two, Shirocco progressed to become his sire’s best progeny. After an eye-catching season racing in Europe where he became the Champion Three-Year-Old, having won the German Derby and the Gran Premio del Jockey Club, he joined Andre Fabre in France and was aimed at the Arc, where he finished a creditable fourth. His greatest performance followed in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Belmont when he won impressively from Ace and Azamour.

His 2006 campaign started equally impressively with victories in the Jockey Club Stakes and Coronation Cup and when he won the Prix Foy all looked well for another attempt at the Arc. However, horses are not machines and his effort at Longchamp was very disappointing, so much so that he missed his intended defence of his Breeders’ Cup crown and was retired, having won seven of his thirteen races, finishing out of the first four on only his last start and earning over £1.3 million.

Monsun has had an outstanding year as a sire with Shirocco the star performer. A brother to Subiaco, Storm Trooper and Satchmo and a half-brother to September Storm, all black-type winners, he boasts an international pedigree with Northern Dancer appearing in the fourth generation of any offspring and it is not surprising he joined the Darley roster of stallions.

Shirocco’s grandam, Sedulous, won the Killavullen Stakes as well as finishing third in the Park Stakes in Ireland. A big horse in ability and size at nearly 16.2h.h.,he is a middle distance specialist which in today’s speed obsessed market may be a disadvantage, but his class will ensure a good book of mares even though the family has not yet produced any notable sires in recent years.
