Silent Times (IRE)

Danehill Dancer - Recoleta, by Wild Again
Dark Bay or Brown, foaled 2003
Breeder: Gerrardstown House Stud
Other sons of Danehill Dancer at stud: Choisir, Indesatchel, Jeremy, Misu Bond, Monsieur Bond, Where Or When.

Silent Times may have been unlucky to have been bought by a team whose declared intention is to make and sell two-year-olds, and very successful they are too. However, in hindsight it would seem that his efforts in his first season could have compromised his later career.

Silent Times ran five times at two, interestingly at never less than seven furlongs, so he was not a natural speed machine. He first appeared in mid-June when second in an Ayr maiden, came out again in the first week of July to score a pillar to post victory in a maiden at York and then ran again just over two weeks later at Newbury, where he had a hard race to finish five lengths behind Close To You.

After a brief break of almost four weeks he travelled to The Curragh for the Group 2 Futurity Stakes, where he attempted to dominate the race as he had at York, but he was not good enough to keep Horatio Nelson at bay, finishing third, four lengths in arrears of the winner. His day of glory was still to come, and three weeks later he dead-heated with Close To You for the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster, with Killybegs chasing up the pair.

As a three-year-old he reappeared in the Lane’s End Stakes on the polytrack at Turfway Park in America but, although sent off favourite, he could only finish 11th of the 12 runners. He had one more run, in the Tetrarch Stakes at the Curragh in May, but again finished nearer last than first.

However, he had done enough to prove that he possessed a talent for racing, coupled with a level of toughness which stood him in good stead.

As a son of the very successful Danehill Dancer and out of an own sister to the multiple Graded Stakes winner Offlee Wild, whose victories included the Grade 1 Suburban Handicap, and from the family of the leading sire Dynaformer, he will obviously appeal to breeders. As he was sold for 220,000 guineas at the Tattersalls Horses in Training sale last October, Chevington were obviously not the only stud interested in acquiring him.

Silent Times retires to Chevington ‘s Irish division, Loughtown Stud.
