Sleeping Indian (GB)

Indian Ridge - Las Flores, by Sadler's Wells
Bay, foaled 2001
Breeder: George Strawbridge
Other sons of Indian Ridge at stud: Calcutta, Compton Place, Definite Article, Domedriver, Indian Creek, Indian Haven, Namid, Nicobar, Tumbleweed Ridge.

John Gosden’s charge only ran 11 times in his three seasons on the track. He did not run at two, and only twice the following year. However, he won both of those races, including a Listed race over a mile at Newmarket.

He was busier at four, running six times for two more victories which included beating Majors Cast and his own distant relative Pivotal Flame in the Gr. 3 Hungerford Stakes He was runner up twice, to Iffraaj in the Park Stakes at Doncaster and to Le Vie dei Colori in the Challenge Stakes at Newmarket, a race he won the following year, 2006, by a length from Killybegs. He held off Spinning Queen and Satchem in the Listed Dubai Duty Free Cup at Newbury before being sent on what seemed somewhat of an ambitious trip to the Breeders’ Cup. Still, fortune favours the brave and the venture paid off when he finished fourth in the Mile behind Miesque’s Approval, Aragorn and Badge of Silver, beaten two and three-quarter lengths, a head and a neck. Rob Roy, Gorella, Aussie Rules, Araafa, Librettist and Ad Valorem all finished behind him.

Being allowed to mature properly obviously paid off, and certainly there are not many juvenile winners in his family. Nor are there any established sires in his immediate family, but as his excellent sire has already got such good progenitors as Compton Place, Namid and Definite Article from families with no better credentials, Sleeping Indian may prove to be another.

His dam was a Listed winner and third in the Italian Oaks, and her other winning offspring include the dual Group 3 scorer Felicity. Her own dam, Producer, was an excellent racemare both in France and the USA and was also well named, as she has bred six winners including the talented
pair Bach and Dancing Goddess.
