Best son of a sire well able to deliver talented performers

Makbul is one of those few horses who, despite everything, manage to make a mark at stud. Based in Staffordshire, he was hardly at the hub of things and certainly never enjoyed even an average size book of mares, but he has proved himself well able to deliver talented performers, far better than either he or his mates were. These include Lord Kintyre, Goldeva, Space Shuttle and, best of all, Striking Ambition.

The latter was a game and genuine sprinter, equally effective at five and six furlongs, and all sorts of going came alike to him. He won two of his three starts at two, including a Listed race at Saint-Cloud, two more Listed contests in each of the two following years before winning yet another as well as the Group 2 Goldene Peitsche and the Group 3 Prix de Ris-Orangis at five. Perhaps even better, he wound up with a career-best effort as short neck runner-up to Patavellian in the Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp.

He is hardly fashionably-bred – few sprinters are - but if he can emulate his sire he could prove a welcome addition to the stud ranks. By Sadler’s Wells’s brother Fairy King, sire of Encosta de Lago, one of Australia’s leading stallions, Falbrav, Victory Note, Helissio, Turtle Island and others, he is out of a winning sister to the very tough and talented Cyrano Storme, winner of 10 races and over £400,000 in France and North America.

The pedigree is packed with speed as well as plenty of winners, some with a bit of class too.
