It was widely believed at the end of 2005 that we would be hailing the new ‘great’ in the shape of Hurricane Run in 2006. It was inconceivable that he would lose more races than he won as a four-year-old, but although he added the 2006 King George to his 2005 Irish Derby and Arc de Triomphe,that was what happened. He frequently ran in snatches, and his victory at Ascot could well have been helped by Frankie Dettori’s apparent determination to intimidate the Japanese challenger on his outside, thus letting Hurricane Run enjoy a run on his inner.

For all that, he was a brilliant horse at his best and if his career at stud mirrors that of his outstanding young sire as closely as his racing record does, he will be a success.

His pedigree on paper would not appear quite as strong as that of his sire, but the absence of any more Northern Dancer, apart from the top line, and Mr. Prospector sires can only be a boon to breeders as so many mares are already saturated with this blood. In fact a return to totally European roots would be a pleasant change and the presence of the great Surumu as broodmare sire is yet another plus.
