Steep declines at Barretts Summer Sale

The Barretts Equine Ltd summer sale of horses of racing age and two-year-olds in training on Tuesday saw double-digit declines in aggregate, average price, and median price from the figures set least year.

Overall, Barretts reported 65 horses sold from 97 offered for an aggregate of $445,050. Thta represented a 73.5% decline on 2007, when 89 horses brought $1,680,200.

The Average price declined 63.7% from $18,879 last year to $6,847 and the median price of $3,700 was down 21.3% from $4,700 last year. The buy-back rate increased from 28.2% last year to 33%.

Last year's sale included four horses from the Meadow Creek Ranch dispersal that sold for a total of $957,500.

The highest price was $40,000 for stakes winner Leesider, who sold to Val-U-Chem Inc. Consigned by Mary Knight, the 2007 Cal National Snow Chief Stakes is by Bertrando out of Sweet Paradise, by Storm Cat.

The highest price for a two-year-old was set when Art Sherman went to $30,000 for a High Demand gelding out of Nordic Weather, by Summer Squall.
