Well timed run lifts Yorkshire Cup on the line

Seven-year-old stayer Geordieland (Johann Quatz - Aerdee, by Highest Honor) hasn't won since June 2005, and was turned over at short odds a number of times last season, when he was second five times in seven starts.

In the Group Two Yorkshire Cup over 1m 6f at York on Friday he was delivered with a superbly timed run by Shane Kelly to beat recent John Porter Stakes winner Royal And Regal by a head.

Royal And Regal had set the pace most of the way under Neil Callan and in the straight opened up a four length advantage as he had most of his rivals struggling. Geordieland was travelling with ominous ease, as he has so many times before, and emerged from the pack with a strong run that saw him hunt down Royal And Regal, passing him to take the lead a matter of strides before the line. Geordieland began to pull himself up immediately on getting his head in front, and Royal and Regal was in front again after the line, but where it mattered the Johann Quatz entire was in front. Samuel stayed on well for third, five lengths down.

Bahamian Babe remains unbeaten after Listed win

The Queen Mary is a possible target for the unbeaten Bahamian Babe (Bahamian Bounty - Baby Bunting, by Wolfhound) after a comfortable victory in the Listed Marygate Stakes over five furlongs.

Ridden by Hayley Turner, Bahamian Babe was soon at the front of the 11 runners and she quickened nicely when asked, forging clear of her rivals in the front rank and nvere being seriously threatened by the placed horses, Langs Lash and Aspen Darlin, who both ran on from the rear.

Bahamian Babe won at Southwell on debut, and followed up on good to soft ground at Thirsk. Today's good to firm going seemed to suit the daughter of Bahamian Bounty well.
