Borderlescott lands Nunthorpe for first Group winFiled on 22 Aug 2008 @ 14:34
Six-year-old lowers track record by over a secondSix-year-old trouper Borderlescott (Compton Place - Jeewan, by Touching Wood) has won eight races and finished second 12 times in his Flat career. Eight of those were in stakes company, where he had yet to win before Friday's Group One Nunthorpe Stakes over 5f at Newmarket when he came good at last for trainer Robin Bastiman, galloping strongly to the line for a decisive win. The time of :56.09 smashed the track record of :57.32 set by Rambling Bear in 1999. The South African mare National Colour raced prominently and went clear in the final two furlongs but Borderlescott came from the pack with a strong run that saw him swallow up the leader and go clear to win decisively. National Colour ran well in staying on for second, ahead of Kingsgate Native who finished well but never threatened the winner. Bastiman told Channel 4 Racing: "I feel overcome, what can I say? "I've trained for 40 years, I've trained moderate horses and I've never had a good one yet but he's good. "He's never won a Listed race or a Group race and now he's won a Group One. He's been chinned in the Stewards' Cup but he always gives his all. I think he's better over five furlongs to be honest. He's been so unlucky but we've finally found his trip." Elnadim colt wins DBS Sales raceThe earlier DBS £300,000 St Leger Yearling Stakes saw Richard Hannon saddle the first two home with Elnawin, who broke well and raced at the forefront throughout, emerging from a line of runners with chances a furlong and a half out and running on gamely to beat his better-fancied stablemate Bonnie Charlie by two lengths. Frognal took third. Elnawin was a 28,000 gns purchase at the DBS Festival Sale last September. Filed on 22 Aug 2008 @ 14:34
