The Kevin Ryan-trained five-year-old Brando (Pivotal), a Group Three winner and winner of the Ayr Gold Cup last season, made a winning start to 2017 with a length victory in the Group Three Abernant Stakes at Newmarket on Thursday.

Ornate attempted to make all, but was overhauled by Brando, ridden by Tom Eaves, who pulled clear to win comfortably by a length.

Windfast was third with Kassia back in fourth.

Ryan said: "He's some horse. We were a little concerned about the (fast) ground but we had to find out as we're going to come up with the same problem at some stage in the season.

"It was nice to get a lead off Ornate, but you start to get worried when Ryan Moore has a soft lead and he seemed to be getting away.

"I said to Tom 'keep sitting on him going into the dip and then go after them' and it worked out well.

"It's a great start to the season for him and Tom rode him with lots of confidence. The most important thing was keeping hold of his head and getting him balanced in the dip.

"Brando has a lot of class and it's the sign of a classy horse to pick one up who's had an easy lead. The Duke of York will be his next run."
