Derby winner emulates Sir Ivor in winning Champion StakesThe meticulous preparation Jim Bolger put into New Approach's (Galileo - Park Express, by Ahonoora) run in the Group One Champion Stakes over 10f at Newmarket on Saturday paid off, with the Gailieo colt utterly dominating his rivals when running out a brilliant six length winner of the race. Twice Over ran on to give trainer Henry Cecil yet another Group One second this season and Linngari took third. New Approach was truculent as ever when being ponied to the start, but the work done in teaching him to settle paid off after the gates opened, with Kevin Manning on New Approach tracking his pacemaker Upton Grey to race off a strong pace in second place, ahead of Full Of Gold and Traffic Guard. Three and a half furlongs out New Approach moved effortlessly alongside the pacemaker and was shaken up to go clear, leaving his rivals toiling in his wake. Twice Over was the best of the rest, bursting clear to take second, a length and a half ahead of Linngari. Manning told Channel 4: "He was very impressive today - I think that was his best performance. I get the easy job, I'm only on him for 10 minutes but fair credit to the boys in the yard and Jim, they are with him all the time and put all the work in. It went perfect, the pace horse set a great seven furlong pace and took me along really well and everything went according to plan." The winning time of 2m 00.13s was a new course record. 11-year-old Caracciola lands the CesarewitchThe Nicky Henderson-trained hurdler Caracciola (Lando - Capitolina, by Empery) was second in the 2m 2f Cesarewitch last year, and he went one better this year at odds of 50-1. Ridden by Eddie Ahern, Caracciola moved smoothly into contention before challenging in the final quarter mile. He ran on well out of the dip to deny Tony Martin's Arc Bleu by three lengths. Mamlook took third and the 7-2 favourite Askar Tau finished fourth. Filed on 18 Oct 2008 @ 14:31
