Duke Of Marmalade toasts rivals

Aidan O'Brien and Johnny Mutagh landed their third Group One of the week at Royal Ascot on Wednesday when Duke Of Marmalade (Danehill - Love Me True, by Kingmambo) improved again to win the Prince of Wales's Stakes by a five length margin.

The four-year-old was the subject of a huge gamble that saw him sent off the even money favourite. He raced in fourth place on the rail as stablemate Red Rocks Canyon set the early pace. Turning in, Duke Of Marmalade couldn't pull out for a stride or two as Pressing went easily to the lead. Duke Of Marmalade found his stride however, and powered clear of the pack to cut down Pressing and surge clear by an ever increasing margin. Phoenix Tower was best of the rest in second, just ahead of Pipedreamer in third.

Duke Of Marmalade sustained an injury after his final start at two, when he was second to Strategic Prince. He had pins inserted, and Aidan O'Brien believes these prevented his showing his true colours last year, when he was thrice placed in Group One company. Since they were removed over the winter he has landed the Prix Ganay and the Tattersalls Gold Cup.

O'Brien said: "He's an unbelievable horse, he's the real deal. He had pins in his legs last year and he had bad fractures in his legs after Goodwood as a two-year-old. Last year we were never really able to train him as he was semi-lame all the time. He wasn't able to use himself the way he is able to this year and he's very athletic now.

"This year he's shown more pace but you'd say, looking at him, that he wouldn't have a problem going further than a mile and a quarter either. He has a lot of options open to him and he's travelling and quickening very well this year."
