Front-running Group Two win for LucarnoFiled on 10 Jul 2008 @ 14:40
Last year's St Leger winner Lucarno (Dynaformer - Vignette, by Diesis) bpunced back from a poor run in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud last time, when he failed to settle, with a fine front-running win in the Group Two Princess of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket. Jimmy Fortune had gone straight to the front on the Dynaformer four-year-old and set the pace throughout. As his rivals crept closer in the straight, Fortune kicked on in the final three furlongs and Lucarno responded by going further clear. Last year's winner Papal Bull was best of the rest as he ran on late under Ryan Moore, going down by one and a quarter lengths. Anna Pavlova dropped out to finish last of the six runners. Fortune told Channel 4: "It worked out ideally - there was never going to be much pace in the small field. "It's taken a long time for him to come together this year but you have to remember he had a lot of racing last year. It was his fourth or fifth race last year before he showed real class." Winning trainer John Gosden said: "I'm very pleased and it was a good effort carrying a Group One penalty. He did very well physically through the winter and is a big bull of a horse. but is starting to come to himself now. "I left him in the King George yesterday and we will consider that. Longer term, I wouldn't be afraid of an Arc or something like that. There are plenty of races for him in the autumn and he could even go out to Japan in November." Papal Bull is also expected to line up in the King George - the race has been his long term aim this season. Filed on 10 Jul 2008 @ 14:40
