Frozen Fire wins the Irish DerbyFiled on 29 Jun 2008 @ 15:39
Frozen Fire comes from last to first as Alessandro Volta causes interferenceThe Aidan O'Brien-trained Frozen Fire (Montjeu - Flamingo Sea, by Woodman), second in the Dante and 11th in the Derby, showed a telling turn of foot to win the Group One Irish Derby at the Curragh on Sunday, coming from last to first to give Aidan O'Brien a third sucessive win in the race. As the race hotted up the winner's stablemate Alessandro Volta had veered across the track, interfering with Curtain Call and Frozen Fire, but the winner won on merit, passing the post two lengths clear of his rivals. Alessandro Volta had taken the lead as the runners entered the straight and he kicked for home under Johnny Murtagh as Curtain Call and Tartan Bearer loomed large. Alessandro Volta came across the pair of them as he veered across the track, but Frozen Fire came with a storming run from the rear under Seamus Heffernan to win comfortably. Casual Conquest emerged from the ruck to take second, ahead of Alessandro Volta, who was later demoted from third by the stewards. Bred in Germany, Frozen Fire is out a winning dam who is a half sister to the high class Group Two winner Flamingo Road. He was a €250,000 Goffs yearling. Filed on 29 Jun 2008 @ 15:39
