Halfway To Heaven gives O'Brien Irish Guineas doubleFiled on 25 May 2008 @ 14:55
Aidan O'Brien added to Henrythenavigator's win in yesterday's Irish 2000 Guineas with victory in the fillies' equivalent, courtesy of Halfway To Heaven (Pivotal - Cassandra Go, by Indian Ridge). Halway To Heaven was prominent throughout for Seamus Heffernan, and saw off the well fancied pair of Nahoodh and Saoirse Abu, who failed to find much under pressure, in the final quarter mile. Mad About You came with a strong challenge, as did Tuscan Evening on the outside, but the winner refused to buckle and found extra, despite the runner up drifting right, to beat Tuscan Evening by a neck, with Mad About You third in a tight finish. The stewards later amended the result, placing the runner up fourth, with Carribean Sunset promoted to third. An improving type, Halfway To Heaven ran twice at two, winning her maiden on debut. She ran a fine race when second to Carribean Sunset in the Leopardstown 1000 Guineas Trial and stepped up on that when third to Zarkava in the French Guineas. O'Brien said: "She had a lovely run first time out at Leopardstown when she got tired late on. Then in France last time she led into the straight before dropping back to be fifth and then staying on again to be third. "She is a hardy lady and has come on for every run and I'm delighted with her. Seamus gave her a great ride, her form was there and she is a very consistent filly. "We knew they'd go a solid pace and the race was fair for everyone. We'll have a look at the Coronation now as she gets the mile well." Filed on 25 May 2008 @ 14:55
