Haradasun sees off Darjina to land Queen AnneFiled on 17 Jun 2008 @ 13:39
Australian import Haradasun (Fusaichi Pegasus - Circles Of Gold, by Marscay) outbattled Darjina to win the Group One Queen Anne Stakes over a mile on the opening day of Royal Ascot on Tuesday. The winner's stablemate Honoured Guest set a muddling early pace, which left the majority of the runners stacked up with chances with quarter of a mile to run. Finsceal Beo, backed in to 9-2 favouritism, briefly took the lead as Haradasun came with a strong run for Johnny Murtagh on the rail. The other filly in the race, Darjina, came to the fore just over a furlong out, but was outbattled by Haradasun who passed the line a head to the good. There was three-quarters of a length back to Finsceal Beo, who rallied late on for third. In fourth was Cesare, who travelled easily for Jamie Spence but met traffic problems before flying home late on. Winning jockey Johnny Murtagh told the BBC: "The last day in the Lockinge was a bit messy. They went no pace and he was a bit keen and keen to the start, but today went well. We moved off the rails and we got a nice slip through and I knew him better today. I knew over a stiff mile with plenty of pace on he would be hard to beat today. "He's very tough and genuine and they are trained and ridden hard in Australia and I knew he'd improve from the Lockinge. The French filly dived at me in the last little bit and in fairness my horse got a bit tired in the last 50 yards, but he is all heart." Filed on 17 Jun 2008 @ 13:39
