Henrythenavigator beats New Approach in 2000 GuineasFiled on 3 May 2008 @ 14:32
The Aidan O'Brien-trained Henrythenavigator (Kingmambo - Sequoyah, by Sadler's Wells) beat the favurite New Approach to win the 200th running of the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on Saturday. New Approach broke well from the stalls and led for Kevin Manning, who asked for an effort two furlongs from home. The Galileo colt responded well, but Henrythenavigator came from midfield with a strong challenge under Johnny Murtagh and overhauled his rival in the final strides, looking like going well clear before New Approach fought back. The winner passed the line a nose to the good at odds of 11-1. Stubbs Art ran a blinder for third, four lengths down, and Raven's Pass, who was left with a lot to do, ran on from the rear to take fourth. Ibn Khaldun was the major disappointment of the race, finishing ninth. By Kingmambo, also the sire of Guineas winners King's Best and Russian Rhythm, Henrythenavigator is out of the Moyglare Stud Stakes winner Sequoyah. The winner of the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot last season, he was placed on soft ground on his next two starts, behind Saoirse Abu and New Approach. Until Jupiter Pluvius was not declared for the race, he was considered the stable's second string for the 2000 Guineas. O'Brien said: "He has always been a good horse. Last year we backed off with the two-year-olds mid-summer and only got going again with them late on. They were also running on winter ground through the summer so we gave them all time. We knew we wouldn't know the results of that until this year. "Johnny gave him a masterful ride and he has always had plenty of speed. It was his first run of the season and he will come on for it. Johnny said he got tired in the final 50 yards. We might have a look at the Irish 2000." Filed on 3 May 2008 @ 14:32
