Tommy Stack's filly Unsung Heroine a fine second

Sir Michael Stoute finally saddled a St Leger winner on Saturday when Ballymacoll Stud homebred Conduit (Dalakhani - Well Head, by Sadler's Wells) ran away with the final Classic of the season under Frankie Dettori, giving the Aga Khan's ypoung sire Dalakhani a second Classic winner to add to Irish Oaks winner Moonstone.

Aidan O'Brien's Hindu Kush set a brisk early tempo and as the leaders faded in the straight the Oaks winner Look Here came to the front with an effortless run. However Conduit was stoked up by Dettori and his run to the front was unstoppable. He hit the front two furlongs out and was soon pushed clear. Despite wandering about in front a little as Group Three-winning filly Unsung Heroine gave chase, Conduit was an impressive winner in the end, passing the post three lengths to the good. Look Here plugged on for third, three and a half lengths behind Unsung Heroine, on a good day for the fillies.

Stoute told Channel 4 afterwards: "It's a great thrill and a great relief. I thought it was a very strong Leger. I thought he ran below par at Goodwood [in the Gordon Stakes], having run a blinder at Royal Ascot [in the King Edward VII Stakes]. He'd had a very good preparation and we were very hopeful."

Stack's son and assistant Fozzy said of Unsung Heroine: "I'm absolutely delighted with that. We've always thought she was very good and it's a pity she has just run into a very good winner today. Even so, there was an Oaks and a Derby winner behind her and next year we might gear everything around the Melbourne Cup. We'll see how she is as regards another run this season and if she has one, it could be in the Breeders' Cup Marathon."
