Kingsgate Native wins the Golden Jubilee

Last year's juvenile Nunthorpe winner Kingsgate Native (Mujadil - Native Force, by Indian Ridge) showed he was every bit as good as a three year old when winning the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes over 6f at Royal Ascot on Saturday.

Sent off at 33-1 after finishing 10th in Tuesday's King's Stand, Kingsgate Native raced on the stands side behind the early pace set by Taekover Target. In the final two furlongs Takeover Target went clear, accompanied by Kingsgate Native and War Artist. The latter pair soon overwhelmed the Australian runner, and Kingsgate Native proved the stronger, sprinting clear to win by a length and a quarter. Sir Gerry ran on from midfield to take third, ahead of Takeover Target.

All the principals in the finish were drawn low; Sakhees' Secret was squeezed up and finished at the rear.

Winning trainer John Best said: "It means so much to the yard to have winners, and to have winners here is the ultimate. Everyone has worked so hard at home and it's so good to do it on the day.

"I thought 33-1 was a crazy price for him. He won the Nunthorpe last year and shouldn't have been anywhere near that price.

He ran with the choke out a little bit earlier in the week. He's done a good job to come back so quickly. He's very relaxed and has done little at home since. He's been sat on once and apart from that he's been out in the field.

"The problem we had was that last year he was a very mature two-year-old and I felt that the weight for age allowance was in his favour as a two-year-old. I wasn't sure whether that would translate as a three-year-old."
