Kirklees takes Gala Stakes for GodolphinFiled on 3 Jul 2009 @ 15:37
Five-year-old wins Listed contest by four lengthsStallion statistics: Jade Robbery Godolphin were responsible for three of the seven runners in the Listed Helical Bar Gala Stakes over 10 furlongs at Sandown on Friday, and it was Kirklees (Jade Robbery — Moyesii, by Diesis), a juvenile Group One winner, who came out best, running on strongly under Frankie Dettori to win by four lengths from stablemate Covert Ambition. Lightly raced Kirklees won a handicap in Dubai in February but disappointed on his last start in the Dubai Sheema Classic. Trainer Saeed Bin Suroor said after the race: "He ran well and Frankie rode him the way we had planned. The break he had since running in Dubai has helped. He had improved in his work, and that gave me confidence coming here. "He has many entries but would need to improve to run in the King George. I am sure he will come on for this and we will keep our options open." Bred by Darley, Kirklees is a half brother to this year's Italian Derby winner Mastery (Sulamani) out of a winning half sister to Group Three winner Bowman. The second dam, Cherokee Rose, was a multiple Group winner for Sheikh Mohammed and John Hammond, winning the Group One Prix Maurice de Gheest and the Haydock Sprint Cup in 1995. In 2008 Jade Robbery had seven winners from 23 runners; this season he has four winners, including Listed winner ceremonail Jade, from only 12 runners thus far. Filed on 3 Jul 2009 @ 15:37
