Marchand d'Or wins July Cup thriller

The Group One July Cup over 6f at Newmarket on Friday saw the 5-2 favourite Marchand d'Or (Marchand De Sable - Fedora, by Kendor) charge home on the stands rail to get up in the final stride to deny Aidan O'Brien's US Ranger by a head. War Artist was third, half a length down.

South African import War Artist had led most of the way, setting a vigorous early tempo. US Ranger was midfield, carrying his head somewhat awkwardly, and Marchand d'Or was settled in the rear by Davy Bonilla.

A furlong and a half out there were many with chances as the field massed behind War Artist. US Ranger ran on and grabbed the lead, but Marchand d'Or was flying on the rail and grabbed the spoils to take a third Group One.

Twice a winner of the Prix Maurice de Gheest, Marchand d'Or beat subsequent King's Stand winner Equiano in the Group Two Prix du Gros-Chene last month before finishing sixth from a poor draw in the Golden Jubilee last time.
