50-1 shot takes second behind Derby winner

Derby winner New Approach (Galileo - Park Express, by Ahonoora) gained his first success since Epsom when winning the Group One Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown on Sunday.

The win gave sire Galileo, trainer Jim Bolger and jockey Kevin Manning a Group One double after Lush Lashes had won the Matron Stakes an hour earlier.

New Approach was off the track for a while after stretching a muscle before the Irish Derby and was beaten into third behind Duke Of Marmalade in the Juddmonte International Stakes a fortnight ago. The Galileo colt had pulled hard in the early stages that time and the supposition was that he would improve for the run.

The rematch was not to be, however, as Duke Of Marmalade was scratched because of the ground this morning.

New Approach duly landded the odds of 8-13 today, taking the advantage coming off the home turn and stretching clear int he straigth under Kevin Manning. He had to be kept up to his work in the final furlong though as the Group-placed Traffic Guard stayed on well to spring a 50-1 shock in second for Jane Chapple-Hyam, beaten only half a length. Mores Wells took third.
