With a pedigree like his, Wolfe Tone already had a lot to live up to but, as so often happens, things just did not work out for him as well as expected.

His brother Sligo Bay won a Grade 1 contest on the turf in America, but our hero had to be content with only one fourth place at that level, albeit in the Ascot Gold Cup (at York), where as a four-year-old he finished seven lengths adrift of the exceptional Westerner.

Wolfe Tone won his only start as a juvenile, an eight furlong race at Galway, but something went wrong and he was not seen out again until he was four. That year he appeared four times, winning the Listed Paddy Power Stakes (better known as the Aston Park Stakes) at Newbury by a head from Gulf, finished a distant third to Caerdeas in the Group 3 Mooresbridge Stakes and fourth to Fight Your Corner in the Henry II Stakes.

He is very closely related to the multiple Group 1 winner and very successful sire Singspiel, who is by In The Wings out of Glorious Song, a sister to Wolfe Tone’s dam, but he, sadly, was nowhere near as brilliant a racehorse.

However, blood will out: his dam is also a sister to Devil’s Bag, and Saint Ballado, both useful sires, while Glorious Song is also the dam of Rahy and Rakeen, another pair of successful sires, among others, and grandam of Prix Vermeille heroine Mezzo Soprano.

With his background and also certainly a measure of racing talent, Wolfe Tone should be capable of siring useful horses given a chance.
