Bolger-trained colt beats hot favourite Henrythenavigator

Jim Bolger's two-year-old filly Saoirse Abu (Mr Greeley - Out Too Late, by Future Storm) caused an upset in the Independent Waterford Wedgwood Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday, beating Aidan O'Brien's 1-2 favourite Henrythenavigator in the six furlong Group One.

The Coventry Stakes winner never travelled like an odds-on shot for Kieren Fallon and 25-1 Saoirse Abu fought out the finish with him, eventually getting up to win by a length. Ger Lyons's filly Elletelle was third.

Saoirse Abu won a Curragh maiden in May before being beaten a length by You'resothrilling in the Group Three Swordlestown Stud Sprint Stakes. She ran in two Listed contests since, being placed once. She is out of a half-sister to the high class miler Morning Devotion, the dam of Balanchine, Romanov and Red Slippers, the dam of Prix de Diane winner West Wind.

Eagle Mountain scores in Group Two

Aidan O'Brien's Eagle Mountain (Rock Of Gibraltar - Masskana, by Darshaan) finally got off the mark for the season, winning the Group Two United Arab Emirates Royal Whip Stakes over ten furlongs. The colt was placed in two Derbys this term.

Decado set the pace before Kieren Fallon sent Eagle Mountain to the front two furlongs out. He ran on strongly and was never threatened by runner up Alexander Tango, who was two and a half lengths in arrears.
