Saxford impresses in Newbury Listed winFiled on 4 Jul 2008 @ 08:06
Saxford (Reset - Bint Makbul, by Makbul) has been steadily improving in five previous starts, culminating in a seven length win at Newcastle a week ago, and the Reset juvenile gained a first stakes win in the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes over 6f at Newbury on Thursday. Ridden by Shane Kelly, Saxford was kept wide of his rivals as he cut out the early running, quickening nicely when asked to run out a game two length winner over Saucy Brown, who looks up to a win at this level. Dabbers Chief was third in a field that contained six previous winners. This was a first Newbury winner for trainer Linda Stubbs, and a first northern hemisphere stakes winner for Reset. Saxford has been entered in the Gimcrack Stakes, and could be seen before then in the Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. Earlier Mick Channon had seen Atlantic Sport burst clear of his rivals to win the Mountgrange Stud Conditions Stakes. The half-brother to Zafeen had disappointed in the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster and has taken a while to overcome a number of problems this season, but looks set to make his mark now.
