Soldier Of Fortune lifts the Coronation CupFiled on 6 Jun 2008 @ 14:44
Last year's Irish Derby and Prix Niel winner Soldier Of Fortune (Galileo - Affianced, by Erins Isle) won the Group One Coronation Cup over 1m 4f at Epsom on Friday, beating the fast finishing Youmzain by three quarters of a length. Getaway was sent off the favourite, but could only finish fifth after being blocked on the rail. The winner's stablemate Song Of Haiwatha set a decent early pace ahead of Macarthur, also a Ballydoyle runner. The pair were well clear of the remainder of the runners, led by the Jockey Club Stakes winner Getaway. Rounding Tattenham corner, Macarthur took the lead and went for home in the straight. Getaway moved closer under pressure to reduce the lead, but he was tracked by Johnny Murtagh on Soldier Of Fortune who came with a threatening run on the outside. As Getaway rolled onto the rail on the Epsom camber, Stephane Pasquier was momentarily trapped behind the tiring Macarthur as Soldier Of Fortune swept by on the outside. The Galileo colt went on to take the lead inside the final furlong, beating Youmzain, who came late on the outside, by three parts of a length. Macarthur stuck on for third and Papal Bull flashed home to take fourth, ahead of Getaway who plainly didn't find Epsom to his liking. Solider Of Fortune was having his first start since finishing fifth in the Arc last year. Described as an "exceptional horse" by Aidan O'Brien, he will be a factor in the 10 and 12f races leading up to this year's Arc. Bred by Jim Bolger, Soldier Of Fortune was purchased by Ballydoyle in preference to another Bolger-bred colt they were offered - Teofilo. Filed on 6 Jun 2008 @ 14:44
