Favourite made to work by Scorpion

The Group One Irish Field St Leger over 1m 6f at the Curragh on Saturday saw Yeats (Sadler's Wells - Lyndonville, by Top Ville)have to battle to get the better of his stablemate, Coronation Cup winner Scorpion.

Scorpion had led most of the race and set sail for home under Seamus Heffernan in the straight. Kieren Fallon stoked dual Ascot Gold Cup winner Yeats up for a run, but at one time it looked too late as Scorpion opened up a decent lead. Yeats responded, however, and came to Scorpion, who fought back. In the final strides Yeats found another gear and at last asserted to win under a cool Kieren Fallon. Mores Wells was third.

This was Yeats' first win in the race - he has been beaten twice before - and is trainer Aidan O'Brien's second major staying prize in two days, after Septimus won Friday's Doncaster Cup.

Sixth Curragh win for Benbaun

Mark Wallace's Benbaun (Stravinsky - Escape To Victory, by Salse) notched his sixth win at the Curragh - four of them Group Threes - to win the Group Three Renaissance Stakes over six furlongs.

In a good result for British-trained horses, Benbaun and Moss Vale drew clear of the remainder, with Moss Vale gaining an advantage two furlongs out. Benbaun fought back with a final effort that saw him a length clear at the line. Prime Defender was third.
